Why Suga’s Mother Owning a Building Shouldn’t Be a Public Controversy

Suga’s family real estate triggers divided reactions.

Confirmation that BTS member Suga’s mother owns land and a newly built property in Hannam-dong has sparked divided online reactions — but, frankly, this is private family business that never needed to become public debate.

Court records show that a corporation called Na-geum Co., Ltd., represented by Suga’s mother and operating with no employees, purchased the site on December 29, 2022 for approximately ₩10.8 billion. After two years of construction, a new building was completed this year. Its current estimated market value is around ₩17.3 billion. The property sits near Hannam District 3, an area undergoing large-scale redevelopment, prompting speculation that the acquisition was a strategic investment.

The building is already in use. Suga’s brother, Min Geum-jae, opened his restaurant Chompi on the first floor in November, attracting both local and international visitors. Other floors host a restaurant, a hair salon, and additional tenants. Suga himself reportedly stopped by recently to check on the site.

Real-estate analysts suggest the family may benefit from Hannam 3 District’s future activation — a redevelopment project expected to become one of the largest in Korea. Some observers also note that several BTS members, including Suga, Jin, RM and Jimin, reside in the Hannam area, a long-time favourite among top celebrities.

But beyond these facts, the noise around this topic reflects a misplaced sense of entitlement to an idol’s family finances. Investments made by an adult’s parent — especially through a legal company structure — are not public property. They are neither scandal nor wrongdoing. Families of high-profile figures should not have to justify legitimate real-estate decisions simply because their child is famous.

In the end, Suga’s mother owning a building is exactly what it sounds like: a private matter, and nobody else’s business.
