BTS Comeback Cost Revealed — And Why Gwanghwamun Was Chosen

The real price behind BTS’s massive Seoul comeback is out — and the story goes far beyond the numbers.

Hybe paid approximately ₩90 million KRW (around $60,000 USD) to stage BTS’s ARIRANG comeback across key locations in Seoul.

About ₩30 million KRW went toward renting Gwanghwamun Square for roughly a week, based on the city’s standard public space usage fees.

Another ₩61.2 million KRW was paid to film at major heritage landmarks, including Gyeongbokgung Palace and Sungnyemun Gate.

But the bigger question isn’t the cost — it’s why this location.

At a March 20 media briefing, HYBE revealed that the decision was deeply intentional. APAC representative Yoo Dong Joo explained that the team wanted a stage that reflects both BTS’s identity and the significance of their return after nearly four years.

He described the comeback as a “historic moment” representing BTS’s present and future — and said the venue needed to match that scale.

And one person played a key role in making that call: Bang Si Hyuk.

According to Yoo, Bang emphasized that BTS — who rose from Korea to become global superstars — should begin their new era in the country’s most symbolic space. That vision ultimately led to choosing Gwanghwamun.

Hybe also framed the concert as part of a broader strategy: turning the comeback into a shared cultural experience, not just for fans, but for the public at large — including international visitors.

Still, the numbers are raising eyebrows.

While Hybe’s direct fees are relatively low due to regulated public rates, the overall scale of the event is massive. Thousands of personnel — including police and emergency services — have been deployed, with citywide disruptions expected.

Supporters say the payoff justifies it, pointing to the global spotlight and tourism boost BTS brings to Seoul.

The ‘BTS Comeback Live: Arirang’ concert will take place at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21 at 8 PM KST, with a worldwide livestream ensuring the moment reaches millions.

Low cost, high impact — and a location chosen to make history.
